Prof. Cesare Sirtori is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Milan. He received his medical degree at the University of Milan and his PhD at the University of Kansas, USA in 1972. Professor Sirtori started one of the first centres for the study of metabolic diseases with high atherosclerosis risk. The University Centre for Dyslipidemias, at the Niguarda Ca’ Granda Hospital in Milan, is a European leading centre for clinical research in the field of lipid disorders and arterial disease monitoring and treatment. He was Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy from 2006 to 2012 and founded the Italian Society of Nutraceutics. Research by Prof. Sirtori has provided major contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms of soya protein, the major hypocholesterolaemic nutraceutical, as well as the clinical impact of metformin in the treatment of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Prof. Sirtori also described the first mutant of human apolipoproteins, apo A-I Milano, and led one of the three groups identifying the first cytochrome P-450 polymorphism CYP2D6.
